COUNTY COUNCIL.
Monday, February. 19. [abridged prom the west coast times.] Mr Dungan moved— " That the Roads and Tracks Committee's report be adopted." Mr Fox seconded the motion. Mr Barpf moved an amendment — "That the Council go into Committee for the consideration of the report." Mr Scanlax seconded the motion, which passed ' without- .; dissent. In Committee, the clauses of the report were considered scrhdhn. The first clause, stating that the CJonui-it tee could not recommend a road from the Kanieri to.the Blue Spur, was passed unaltered. The second clause was amended to read as follows : — "The Committee,' in reference to the petition for a track from Maori Gully, Arnold, to Stillwater, recommend that the County Engineer be instructed to report on same." The fourth clause, relating to the erection, of a bridge over the Wainihinihi, on the Christchurch road, was struck out, as it was already provided for in a resolution previously passed by the Council. The report as passed in Committee was adopted. Mr Hoos moved — "That all docu-, ments having reference to the letting of the road between Greymouth and the Coal Gorge be laid on the table." He said that he had heard that the specifications and. articles of contract /had not been carried out, and ho moved for the papers to satisfy himself on the matter. Mr Barfp seconded the motion proformaj butconldnot see what object the mover sought to attain. The Chairman said that the motion was harmless, and he was quite willing to comply with it. The motion passed without dissent. Mr Baret wished to draw attention to the fact that several sessions ago a resolution had been passed by the Council offering a reward for the discovery of a new gold field in the County. He men? tioned the matter because he thought the, expediency of offering such a reward had 'been mentioned in the public Press, and
he had also, been spoken to on the subject. He believed the resolution- still stood gpodi and that the only reason the^ amount did not appear from time to time on the Estimates was because it was con-sidered-that when the reward was claimed it would be time sufficienMo do so. The Chairman said that the matter was as stated by the member for. Arahura, and if the Council thought fit, the reward could be advertised in the newspapers or by placards; Mr Barfp said" that'his object tats quite answered by mentioning the matter in the Council, so that it should obtain publicity through the Press. ♦ On the motion of Mr Barff the Council adjourned until Wednesday evening.
