THE RICHMOND RAILWAY COLLISION.

MELBOURNE, December 4.

The total number of those injured by the Richmond railway accident is now known to exceed fifty, and by some the number is estimated at fully seventy. Many of the sufferers proceeded £ 0 their homes. The injured include Mr Taylor, auctioneer, and Mr Pyet his clerk. Mr Dalgety, clerk, had his leg fractured ; and Mr Andrew Jack is suffering from severe injury to his head. Miss Berry, daughter of the ex-Premier, is suffering from a severe shock to her system ; and Councillor Cavenagh from internal injuries. Messrs Crowther and Ross are dangerously wounded, and their condition is critical. Many others are seriously injured. Received December 4th, 2.30 p.m. The Hawthorne collision has proved more serious in its effects than the accident which occurred near Jolimont in August, XSSI. More fatalities, however, wore caused by the latter than arc likely to arise from Saturday’s disaster. The following are the names of the others seriously injured by the Hawthorne collision:—Mr Evilles, injuries to legs an ! back an i severe shook to the system; Laura Brown, age i twelve, fractured log ; Mr Scorfiel ', a tailor, internal injuries, an • now in a critical state ; Mr Smith, a solicitor, concussion of the brain; Mrs Lawlor, a lan la y, concussion of the spine; Lawrence, a schoolboy of Kow, broken leg ; Mr Cochron, a clerk, fractured ribs. The injuries to the other persons are not of a serious character.

Received December sth, 1.20 a.m. Most of the sufferers by the railway accident are now progressing favorably. The inquest will be opened to-morrow (Tuesday), and after the inquest a Court of Inquiry into s the circumstances which led to the collision will be held. The station-master at Hawthorne has been suspended. It is expected that the damages to be awarded to those injured will be much larger than by the Jolimont accident last year.
