LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held on Monday night, when there were present—Councillors Macpherson, Smith, Weybumo, Grubb, Webb, Heed, Qarforth, Dr. Macdonald. On a motion, Cr. Macpherson was voted to the chair. Receipts amounting to £93 7s wore reported. Mr Isaac Robinson declined to lease the 20ft of land on Norwich Quay on the terms offered by tho Council. Tho opinion was expressed that the conditions were too stringent, and the matter was left with the estates corn mittee to report upon. The following correspondence was received in reply to inquiries instituted by the Council as to the comparative cost of gas in the different boroughs named : Prom Wellington Town Clerk, staling that they had 184 street lamps, costing per lamp, per annum, £7 9s Hid, They are lit by tho Corporation, at a cost of £9B 16s per year, and lit every night (moonlight nights excepted) from sunset to sunrise. Prom Ohriitohurch : Number of lamps, 184; cost, £7 14s per year each, and six at £9 ; lit from sunset to lam. every night, excepting for three nights before and after full moon; Gas Company Heht and extinguish. Prom Invercargill : 162 lamps ; cost per lamp, per year, £4 Is sd. From Nelson : Number of lamps, 60 ; cost per lamp, per year, £5. From Napier : Number of lamps, 44; cost per lamp, per annum, £9 10s. Prom Ashburton : Number of lamps, 20; cost per lamp, per annum, £l3. Port Chalmers: Number of lamps, 12 ; cost per lamp, per annum, £9 Is. On motion .the whole question was left with the lighting committee to report at tho next meeting. Mr John Sowden applied for a lease of about a quarter of an acre of land on the west side of the time ball tower for building purposes for twenty-one years. The land is at the present time under lease to Captain R. Wood, and Mr Sowden advised that he could arrange with the present lessee for the remainder of his term. The opinion was expressed that it would have to be let by tender or auction, and it was finally agreed to leave it in the hands of tho estates committee to report. Accounts amounting to £157 Is 61 wore passed for payment. The resolution of the 23rd of May, adopting by-law relating to building regulations was confirmed. Or. Smith drew attention to the unsatisfactory state of the drainage and the footpath on Ripon street, towards Canterbury street. The works committee promised to attend to it. On the motion of Ors. Smith and Reid, the clerk was instructed to write to Mr Mclntosh, asking him to make good the footpath at the place on Simeon Quay where he is depositing clay. Or. Webb drew attention to the state o. the drainage in Joycetown. Tho opinion was expressed that Joycetown shared very well in the outlay of the town for drainage. Or. Webb spoke of the rut# in the roads made by the Gas Company, He wanted to know whether these trenches were put right by the town at the town’s expense or at the Gas Company’s. The Foreman of Works stated that the town sustained no loss in connection with these trenches. Or. Webb spoke of the economical feature connected with the use of the electric light and the general use which is being made of it in American cities. Ho suggested that the Council think of the matter, and it was agreed that Cr. Webb might get some further information respecting it. The lighting committee reported having placed two lamps on the Little Eronchley road, and had accepted a tender for four more lamps of the same pattern as those now in use. The report was received and adopted. Or. Hawkins wrote that the fence on London street would be removed in accordance with the wish of the Council. Leave of absence was granted to Or. Hawkins for three meetings.
