FOOTBALL.

PILGRIMS v HAVENS. The above match took place-on Saturday last on the Pilgrims’ ground on the NorthEast Town Belt in the presence of a goodly number of spectators. Play commenced at 3 o’clock. The Ravens (wearing bine and white and captained by Parker) winning the toss chose the northern goal, thus getting the benefit of the slight wind then blowing. Bowley kicked off for the Pilgrims (who wore gold and black) sending the ball well into the Ravens’ quarters, and being smartly followed up the golds managed to keep it well into the blues’ 25 yards during the greater part of the spell, until Kenvig getting hold of the ball made a brilliant run, and being badly let off by tho golds’ backs secured a touchdown, which Pair converted into a goal from the try by a neat kick. On resuming play for the second spell Hawkes kicked off for the blues, who immediately rushed the ball into their opponents’ goal'line, who were forced to touch-down in self-defence. On the ball being taken out some very hard scrimmages took place, the golds gradually working tho ball out of danger, and time being called without either side gaining any advantage. Third spell—Bowley again kicked off for the golds, but the ball being well returned by the blues’ backs the golds were again forced to touch-down. Parsons taking the ball out made a good kick, and Smith shortly after in a fine run took the ball well into the middle of the field, where Kenvig made a mark. Earr made a very good attempt at goal. The rest of the spell was a series of well-contested scrimmages. Fourth spell, Hawkes again kicked off for the Ravens, and the ball being well returned by the golds’ backs, a lot of well contested scrimmages took place, the ball eventually going into touch. De Oastro bounced it in and made a good run, but was well collared by Buchanan (back), who secured the ball, and after a good run made a shot at goal. The golds were then hard pressed until Henry, getting tho ball, sent it by a good kick into the middle of the field. Fuller shortly after ran tho ball on to the blues’ goal line, but the blues were not to be denied, Kenvig again making a good run, and on being collared passed the ball to Stringer, who ran in and secured another touchdown for the blues. The try at goal was a failure. Time being called, the game resulted in a victory for the Ravens by one goal and a try to nil. For the Ravens Kenvig, Farr and Parker played very well as hacks, while among the forwards Stringer, Shaokelton, Blanchard and Farr were conspicuous. For the Pilgrims Fuller and Smith as quarters, and Henry as half back did their side good service, while the forwards worked hard to a man, so that it would be unfair to mention any one in particular.
