Mr. Shearer, who is a member of the Institute band, was making the mossing during a special daylight trip of the Matangi on Saturday for the purpose of taking bandsmen to the Now Zealand championships at Nelson. The vessel experienced a rough trip in Cook Strait, there being a heavy sea running. Mr. Shearer was on the lower after dock and was walking from one side to tho other, when the vessel gave a sudden lurch which sent liim sliding on the wet deck. His shin struck a raft scat and he went hurtling over the side of tho boat. Luckily ho had the presence of mind to grasp omJ of the lower iron railings and he was thus saved from a headlong flight into the heavy sea from which rescue under the conditions would have been impossible.
