No cases of suspected or positive infantile paralysis were reported in the Otago and Southland health district yesterday. The girl of 13 admitted to hospital for observation r n Monday has been found n. negative ease, so that there lias been no positive cases in Dunedin since January 30.—P. A.

Motor lorries are playing a prominent part in the quick- transport of sheep t.o‘ the Waiokea and the King Country. A draft of 800 sheep, the balance of a lot of 1500, and comprising 5-year and two-tooth owes and some wethers, loft Puha in ten trucks at 5.15 a.m. on Thursday, were on the 1 p.m. train at Taneatua and were in the paddocks in the King Country yesterday morning, arriving in very fresh condition.

An unusual position aross at a mooting of the Alakara County Conn cil yesterday, when the permanent employees of the council submitted proposals for new conditions of work. The employees were recently granted a now award and it is understood that the conditions suggested in the new proposal are similar to those obtained before the award came into force. It -is stated that, so far as the men were concerned, they were i.n many respects decidedly hotter off under the old conditions than under the new award. It was decided to accept- the new proposals and instruct the employees to make application tc the authorities con-cerned.—-P.A.

General regret has been expressed in many quarters at the decision to debar further racing on the Makaraka domain. The ultimatum was issued by the Minister of Lands, the Hon. F. Langstone, and not, as is commonly understood, by the -Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. AY. ]5. Parry, who controls racing. In response to numerous requests a petition has been drawn up asking Mr. Langstone to reconsider his,-decision. This, petition will he laid on a table outside the secretary’s office' oh the Makarakn domain to-day/ and it is fully anticipated, will ho very largely signed.

The massive Bledisloe Cup for Maori farming, which has been won by Mr. Henry Hewer, of Tikitika, is on display in the Window of Messrs. Good and Go., jewellers. One side ht the cup, which is of solid silver, is devoted to an engraving of ancient Maori life, including primitive Maori methods of cultivation, the carved where, 1 the canoe and raupo. On the other sidfe, the engraver has depicted modern farming methods ■ with. the plough, together with farm animals. The/ trophy is 22 inches high and stands on a six-inch' plinth. The cup ivas delivered to. Messrs. Good and Co. in a caso about 3ft in Height. It will be presented to Mr, Dewer 'on March 2. ■ ;

A 16ft. boat, built in Auckland to tlie order of Mr. A. M. White, of Ngatapa, for fishing at Wuikaremoan'a, arrived in Gisborne by the Ivartigi on Thursday, and .was loaded on to a lorry and sent to the lake. Air. White anticipates spending ' next monjfh at Waikarcmoana. The boat is of an open rowing boat design with the’ forepart raised and completely decked in, forming a, spacious locker for carrying camping; and other gear. The stern .of’ the craft is constructed to take an outboard motor, and when launched at the lake a 4-J h.p. engine will be fitted.
