FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of tho Gisborne Borough Council; was held last evening'}-- present,: The Mayor (Mr. D. WV Coleman; M.P.) and GTs. G. ißrad*' ley Smith, H. Holmes, J;. Webb, D. S. Thompson, J. Hall. Nj H. Bull, 11. H Do Costa -and P. H. Bushnell.

Maunder, hon. secretary nf the Beautifying Association, Avroto requesting permission for the .association to continue, thc plafiting ofitrees in Gladstone road, from Ly,t.toV r,oad, to Chalmers road. It was proposed that native trees should be;used, and tho following had,been suggested: Tofcara, pittospbrum, eugenoicles, koAfihai, and karalca. It was proposed , that the avenue should be eventually continued to the aerodrome.—The letter Was referred to the Avorks committee. Tho Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister oi Internal Affairs, advised that Arbor Day Avcfiikl be observed, bn Wednesday, August 5, and sought the active, cooperation of tho council.:—lt Avas decided'; to' comply with the request. ■A letter Aya's rccqived from Mrs 'ftf.' When this is completed the lease to be forwarded to the Minister for his approA r al. The report Avas adopted. PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE. Tho public works committee's report, included the following items: Regarding the use of patent budding materials, various boroughs communicated with advise that no special provision is made in their bv-laivs respecting this matter, saA*o that in all cases strict adherence to the maker’s specification is insisted upon. It avus recommended that the application to sub-divide a dAvelling houso by a partition of plaster-board be not approA-ed, unless the partition fs constructed in either brick or concrete, as provided for in the building by-laAvs. In regard to an application to subdivide a section in, the No. 3 building area it Avas recommended that it be not acceded to as the sections do not contain a sufficient area to' comply with the by-laws. The installation of a septic tang iu a non-sewered area AA*as not approved, it being considered from a community standpoint inadvisable to approve of tho installation of septic tanks as it tended agaisnt the' providing of a seAveragc system for that locality. An alternative proposal to provid'd a sewerage service by utilising second-hand steel pipes AV*as also not recoin in eiided. The report wits adopted.

R/UTENE ROAD RESERVE. Tlie reserves and waterworks committee’s report stated that the Tuvanga Croquet Club bad AA-ritteu suggesting that the pine trees on the Butene road frontage be lopped, and offering to donate plants and. flowering shrubs along this frontage. Tlie committee decided to hold over a recommendation in this matter pending the engineer furnishing an estimate of the cost of felling the trees inking into consideration the 'value of the lirOAVOod recovered. Mr. .Tanies McKee was granted, permission to place a movable shelter oil tho yeservo, for the use of the, lady croquet players. In regard - to. thq, suggestion that the trees on tlie RuUne road reserve be typped. Cr. Rushnelj. moved that no action be taken and Cr. KAITI BUS EXTENSION.
