The fortnightly meeting of the |j •'Oisbame Boroughi Council was held last evening. Present: ’The Mayor, Mr D. W. Coleman, M.P., and Ora. H. li. DeCosta, N. 11. Bull, J. Hall, D. S. Thompson, J. Webb l , P. Bushnell, 11. Holmes, 11. E. 'Mande, and G. Bradley Smith. In regard to a proposed conference on hospital expenditure the clerk of the' Waikohu, County wrote stating that the Council had every confidence in its representatives) >oii the Hospital Board and did not see that the conference suggested would, serve any useful purpose.—Tiio letter was re-

ceived. On the Raima subject a letter was received from the clerk of the Cook County Council agreeing to be represented at the proposed conference and stating that the chairman (Mr Chas. Matthews) and Civs. Bowen and Thomas would represent the council.—The letter was received.

Mr W. G. Morrison wrote complain ing of stormwater discharging on to his property, Sievwright road, and. also requesting improvements to the footpath in the same road.—The matter was referred to the works committee.

Co-ordinating Buyers Ltd., forwarded particulars of a scheme for co animating purchases for local authorities.—lt was decided on. the motion of the Mayor, to refer the matter to the finance committee for a re-

port. The hon. secretary of the Festival of Sport, Mr L. Y. Harris, sought permission to close Childers road from Read’s Quay to . the Oval and also to rope off the intersection at Customhouse street, from 9 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. on June 23, fm> the purpose of conducting a wheelbarrow derby.—The Mayor said that some little time ago the council had received a letter regarding the Festival of Sport and had promised its support. June 23 was a holiday, and there was not much traffic along Childers load on that day.—On the speaker’s motion the application was granted.

The hon. secretary of the Gisborne Golf Club, Mr L. Y. Harris, wrote stating that, the dance held in the main stand at the Domain was such ■a success financially that the committee sought permission to* hold, a ■series of four such dances, with the object of raising funds on behalf of the Festival of Sport.—lt, was decided to grant the. application. An application from the Gisborne Abattoir By-products Co., Ltd., to ■jnstal a blood receiving plant at the abattoirs, was granted, subject to the work being done to the satisfaction of the Borough engineer . who will confer with the abattoirs manager.

Mr James Miller wrote complaining of the condition of Kingsley noad and footpath.—The letter was referred to the works committee.

The building inspector, Mr L. W. Patterson, submitted a list of 2G licenses' for hoardings, etc., and Ob licenses for dangerous goods in various parts of the borough.—lt was deeded that- the licenses be renewed, subject to any conditions recommended by the inspector being eompi’ed with.

“For the past four years owing to prevailing economic conditions, the council lias reduced the' taxi stand license fee from £2- to £l. This matter is again referred to you for your consideration”, stated the report of the town clerk.—On the motion of the Mayor, it was decided that the fee for this year should be £l. Cr. Holmes' drew attention to the had state of the footpath on Gladstone road near Phillip’s Corner. There were large pools of water, ho said, lying in several places and these caused much inconvenience to pedestrians. The matter was referred to the engineer to present a repo t t.n the works committee.

Cr. Thompson said that in the borough plantations quite a number of trees had missed and now was an opportune tine to replace them. There were about 3000 misses in the borough reserves. On his- motion, seconded hv Cr. DeOosta., it was decided that the matter should he referred to the reserves committee, with power to net. The Mayor said he was not favorable to the scheme. The Napier Borough Conner 1, had evidently a number of d'ffdrent works, all proceeding under different award's. Tn fact he had boon told there were ten awards to he observed by the Napier council. So far as the Gisborne Borough Council was concerned, its work had been cackled on amicably. All its men wore under two awards, the Drivers’ Union and the General Laborers'’ Union, and the Council dealt direct with them. There had been no trouble in i Gisborne for many years.
