M AJESTiC THEATRE
‘•peter IBBETSOX” AND “MILLS OF THE GODS” “Peter Ibbelsou”, the Paramount film version of the novel hy George du Mauric’- 1 , which heads the double-feature programme at the the Majestic Theatre iod>;y, win come as n. strange adventure in the experience of the average ph-turr patron. That the adventure is one that win he tally appreciated is beyond doubt, for, although the picture is far r:ntoved from th.e ordinary run ol screen ent ert linmrnt and introduce ; a, motive that is nltogollr. r unusual, it has ah appeal, and receives an interpretation that must win complct approbation from all who see it. I>u. Maurier’s phantasy of the childhood sweethearts who, parted by disaster, find a happy reunion in a diha/n life, is a theme which oilers many a hazard to successful translation to the screen. What- may win sympathy and become convincing through the poetry of words may not necessarily he as impressive through the more realistic medium of the screen. The producers of •'Peter Ibbetson.” however, gain the reward of courage and make a brilliant offering whbvo there might easily have been a blatant and a banal one. The principal players accomplish an unusually difficult task with distinction. Gary (Jooper fills the role of Peter Tbbetson, the architect sentenced to life imprisonment, with simplicity and. understanding, never wasting .or over-emphasising a gesture, and alw'ays acting with the resstrainf that makes such a part successful. Aim Harding, as Alary. Duchess of Towers, is equally impressive. The. second feature- on tire same programme will be “Mills of the Gods,’’ with May Hobson starred.
