Official circles soy that so . many falsehoods are associated with the case in which the self-styled Colonel Pedro Lopez, is accused of plotting to fabricate evidence that the Abyssinian forces had been supplied with illegal ammunition by British interests, that it >s difficult to ascertain tho truth of any statements made, including the reported assertion of Lopez that he was horn in Melbourne.
Tho Foreign Secretary, Mr Anthony Eden, stated in the House of Commons on Monday that Lopez was known variously as Burnstein, Henry Lawrence, Singleton, Hadhill and Mezler. ITe was a notorious purveyor of false information and forged documents.
In the House of Commons to-day Sir Donald Somorvill, in reply to a question by Mr. W. Gallacher, the Communist member for Fife, said he did not think that Lopez was connected with the dockyard sabotage cases. Mr. Arthur Henderson asked whether legislation would he introduced constituting activities' similar to those of Lopez, as an indictable offence. Sir Donald Somervell: I am considering the 1 matter from all aspects and am unable to make a statement. Mr. F. S. Cocks, the Labor member for Broxtowe, asked whether Mr. Eden would demand an apology from Signor Mussolini or sever dinlomatic relations with Italy in view of the relations of Lopez with officials of the Italian Embassy in London. Viscount Crarihdrne said ho was aware that Mr. Eden’s statement had been ridiculed in the Italian-controlled press.
