WINTER SHOW

ANNUAL MEETING At the annual meeting of the Winter Show last evening’ Mr T. G. Lawless presiding, reference was made to the past lack* of public support, and a -special committee was* appointed to investigate the possibility of holding a- show this year. The annual report was as follows: “At the beginning of last year* your committee 'was faced with the, problem of whether it would bean the interests of the- Association to hold a; show during 1935- After careful deliberation however, it was decided that it would be acting in the best interests of the district, if the 1930 function was proceeded with. This decision was largely accelerated by the very generous offer made by Messrs Common, Shelton and Co., Ltd., to allow the, association the use of the .wool -store, entirely free of charge. ’ “The question of devising ways and means of rendering the Show more attractive to the public was gone into very- carefully and, as a. result, one or two new features were incorporated in the Show. Despite the fact, however, that the executive working harmoniously and wholeheartedly, and also receiving the sup port of the exhibitors, trade exhibitors, judges, and stewards, did every ’thing- in. its* power to make the 1935 •Winter Show a- success, sufficient support was ont- forthcoming from the public, and the function again resulted in a; loss. “The financial year under review resulted in the Association showing a, loss of £66 17s lOd on the year’s working, compared with a loss of £ll 8s fid for the previous year. The total expenditure for the year was £566 2s 5d as against £560 14s* lOd for 1934. The increased expenditure was largely due to the following reasons : (1) The Show season being extended a- further two days, this resulting in increased expenditure for advertising, lighting, and wages; (2) The increased cost- of staging a- dog show, vie., £lO 5s 6d, canary and cage bird show £l3 12s, and national dancing £l2 12s fid. When these two factors: are taken into consideration, it will be seen that every care was taken to curtail expenses as the total increase was only £5 7s 7d. The year’s income shows a- decrease of £SO Is 9d, the chief falling off being, in the door takings-, viz.,' £57 10s fid.

“Bearing the fact in mind that the association has, during the last four years, been unable to- show a profit on any one year’s working your executive is not very sanguine as regards the future and recommends the incoming committee to seriously consider going into recess for a year. During the year the Association suffered a great loss in the death of Mr F. G. Murphy, vo-ur president. Mr Murphy had been for many years one of the moss enthusiastic workers on behalf of the Winter Show, and his. death is greatly mourned bv all those who wore fortunate enough to he 'associated with him in an executive capacity, and who fully realised his sterling qualities. To- his family, the s'incerest sympathy of all members goes forward.

“The executive also* wishes to take the opportunity in this report of con vcying to the relatives of the late Mr W- McCullough their deepest sympathy. Mr BFcCullough was at all times a keen supporter of the Show, and both as an exhibitor and as ajudge, had assisted the association in many ways.

“It is with, regret, that yOur executive has to make mention of the departure from the district of one -of our keenest supporters and vice-pre sident-s, the Rev. R. Hodgson. Both the Rev. Hodgson and Blrs Hodgson have been keen workers and have at all times clone everything in their power to further the interests of the association. Their departure from the district was greatly regretted by your executive. “The thanks of the Association are duo to all those who have in many diffeerent ways assisted, Winter Show work; to our judges: and stewards, to the exhibitors, to our trade exhibiters, to Blessrs Common Shelton and Co., LtcL, for t-hie use of their wool store free -of charge, to the press for their full and comprehensive reports, to the Borough Council tor their co-operation, and to- all those enthusiasts, tco numerous- to mention, who have during the past year, helped to further our mutual interests.” ' ’
