N.S.W. ELECTIONS

PREMIER STEVENS’ POLICY

TILT AT LANG REGIME

(U.P.A. by Elec. Tel. Copyright.) (Received April 25, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 25.

Delivering a policy speech in Iris own electorate, Croydon, Premier Stevens dwelt at length on the gratdijyfng transformation in the business, industrial and rural life of the State inee his Government took over from the Lang regime three yean? ago, when the aggregate deficit was £22,890,000.

This huge deficit, said the Premier, had been reduced to less than £3,000,000, while taxation and other charges and financial burdens had been reduced by £12,500,000. A still greater achievement was the expenditure hv the Government in the pant three years of £26,000,000 on public works, and a reduction in unemployment- to manageable proportions. Air Stevens declared that the Government’s policy for the future would, as in the past, be directed to the development of the State’s resources, the continuation of water conservation power and irrigation schemes by helping farmer.? to grow crops or raise cattle along scientific lines; co-operating with the Commonwealth Government in exploring avenues of profitable export; providing machinery for a- Federal compulsory pool, as desired by the wheatgrowers; affording further relief to neeesr-itious farmers; setting up a better organisation for the fruit industry and the development of mineral resources. All possible facilities would be given for private enterprise to create big industrial undertakings and due protection would be afforded bona fide unionists against any form of exploitation.

The Government, if returned, would maintain or extend all existing social services and would also examine schemes !for unemployment insurance. An adequate network of aerodromes would be provided for the development off air transport. Regarding the chain store system of trading, which had come under review, the Government would take appropriate action if the results of its investigation warranted it.
