Commenting on the Sydney Chip, the “Sydney Morning Herald’’ sas it was not a- particularly interesting race, but there was a fine thrilling finish. Sylvandalc and Dark Sky were fighting for supremacy when Akuna swept along and joined them in a punishing finish, in which none of the three faltered. They flashed past the post almost in line. The ‘Daily Telegraph’’ says that Akuna, who was well-hack at the halfmile, won the race with a finishing brilliance which overcame the advantage which the faster horses hail gained. King March slowed the field down almost to a cantor, but what the Sydney Cup may have lacked as a test of stamina was forgotten in a finish that outshone the great Doncaster battle on Saturday. Sylvan dale definitely was the unlucky horse of the race. The “Telegraph” points out that the winning jockey, Hanley, who is an apprentice aged 19 years, has only ridden four winners in 2) years. NOTES AND NEWS. On the first day at Riverton Barn Door broke his back when he fell in the Waiau Steeple, and Towing dropped dead after the same race. -.a * <u First Song, winner of the Riverton Chip, was seventh favorite in <avn eight horse field. * * * The Riverton Easter Handicap, of £325, was won hy Walton Park, the second favorite, with Venite, fifth favorite, second. The public fancy Grand was third. is * * Trishna surprised hy winning the Easter Handicap at F'eilding decisively. He took the lead seven furlongs from home and was never ca ught. Fla die put up a. good effort to overhaul him, but his weight anchored him and, with Broughton easing him up, lie was nearly caught napping for second money hy Rust. ■i- iji * In the Riverton Steeples, which were won by Royal. Limond, with Nylotis second and French Fleet third, Dempster, rider of Quinopal, collapsed after fbe race an t d was removed to hospital. E. Jenkins, rider of Eeckffechan, received a broken jaw, and T. Langford fractured his collarbone. .1: H: ‘S Semper Paratus won the Autumn Handicap at Tanheranikau in a close finish with Speed. West Tor endeavoured to make the pace all the way, but compounded at the -distance. Semper Paratus, who trailed the leaders, moved up at the three furlongs, and was in charge at the home turn. . Speed went after him, and in a neck and neck struggle Semper Paratus prevailed by the narrowest of margins. Three lengths (further back D-avistock beat Vertigern for third money. West Tor and Navahp: were last. m * v. The Champagne Stakes resulted in one of the most exciting finishes staged in tbe race for many years. Silver Sail took charge shortly afte the start, but Kinnoull entered tbe home run .slightly in front of Hororata and Heritage. Silver Sail dropped out at the distance and Heritage and Hororata drew up to Kinnoull. A hard struggle then ensued this trio racing in line to within 100 yards of the post. Hororata was the first to weaken, and then Kinnoull and Heritage -settled down to a neck and neck fight. Kinnoull gaining the ascendancy a few strides 'from the post to win, by a neck Hororata .wan a fair third, over a length in front of Greek Shepherd, with Silver Sail and Heloise tailing off. ill * ih Golden King and Chidden accounted for most of the speculation in the C.J.C. Autumn Plato, and they headed the field home. At the end of two furlongs Glowlight had charge, but Gblden King gradually forged to the front and was first into the straight frm Glowlight, and Chidden. Golden King was always the winner and had a clear length to spare at the post from Chidden. Glowlight lasted lon,g enough to hold off Earthquake for third money.
