Within a few minute* superior combinations began to khowl out. Wanganui; Otago and Wellington were out in front after half a mile, when Wanganui assumed control and went way as they pleased. After opening ouf about two lengths they maintained that lead, rawing easily all the day. Otago made valiant efforts to reduce the lend, hut were no match for the leaders, who were a picture on the water. The other competitor,; bunched some lengths in the rear, and coming through the choppy stretch Canterbury arid Wellington swamped. Auck land then rowed into third position, heading Ehsti Coast and Southland to the line. No official time was taken owing to the swampings, but it was approximately 19^min.
