BOWLS

BURTON CUP TOURNEY

THREE AfORE ROUNDS PLAYED

Three more rounds of sectional play, making six to date, were decided in the Burton Cup tourney on Saturday. Conditions were excellent and interest in the tournament i l ' growing apace as the stronger teams forge ahead. What would appear to he a surprise packet is the team from Tokomaru skipped by V. Lowe, who lias with him Short, Law. and Ccrbett. All young players, these men have gone through isix games With hut one loss. Defeat came to them when they met- a particularly good team, skipped hv F. William's, in D section, and were beaten by the sriiall margin of three points. This was undoubtedly one of the host games in 'the tournament, each man on both sides carrying his weight. Both teams wore heartily applauded by the spectators whip were delighted by such an exposition of the good old game.

Section A also produced u thriller when Bennett (Poverty Bay) without a loss met AlcGregor (Gisborne) one loss. On the Bth head the scores stood: AlcGregor 15, Bennett nil. At one stage someone called “Wake up, George!” And he did. His team pulled together until the 21st head; when the score was 21 all. On the extra head Bennett made ho mistake, and notched his sixth win. Play on Kahutia green was patchy S’talencss or “dry rot” was very noticeable in come teams.

Rohins-on and Newt-on had a terri fic struggle right through a well played game. Robertson emerged the victor on an extra head.

A team of colts froth Poverty Bay played a great game against Roderick —that old campaigner from Kahutia. Fredericks, a first year player; took the helm, arid with liis last bowl drew a very difficult shot, giving him the necessary point to win. This, young player was ably assisted by Cook, Ansell, arid Leech. Sectional play will be continued to-day, weather permitting, and the finals will be played on the KaHiitin greens to-morrow.
