COOK HOSPITAL MAINTENANCE TOTAL OE £29,049 IN FIVE r ' YEARS - Maintenance expenditure by Cook Hospital Board during the five years ended on March 31 last showed the very substantial decrease of £29,049 as compared with the total in the previous five-yearly period. This point was made clear by comparative figures placed -before the board at Thursday’s meeting by the managing secretary, Mr C. A. Harriot, who was warmly complimented hv members on the remarkable improvement in finances, without loss oif efficiency. Mr Harries intimated that a cash comparison of maintenance over the past ten years shewed the following figures (in each case for the financial year ending at March 31): —

The comparison of flic two fiveycarlv periods gives a nett decrease of £26,098, to which, moreover, must be added the nett cost of the maternity home (£2951), included in the last two years’ expenditure, bringing the actual reduction for the past five years to £29,049. Dealing with the year just concluded, Mr Harries stated that the capital receipts totalled £2523 and expenditure £2129', leaving £394 unexpended at the end of the year. Maintenance expenditure for the same period amounted to £37,923, an-J receipts to £36,656, leaving an excess of expenditure of £1267. The actual amounts claimed on local authorities and Government subsidy .for maintenance only, was given by Mr Harries as follows: 1927, £28,416; 1928, £37,563; 1929. £28,544; 1930, £35.562; 1931, £35,519; 1312, £23,768; 1933. £26,904: 1934, £29,042; 193-5, £23,975; 1936 (proposed) £31,431.
