Lady Eka was fourth. NOTES, AND NEWS Seafox, who bad not had a. race since last Christmas until ho contested! the Timaru Cup, made a hold showing for the ,greater part of the journey, and in the circumstances it is reasonable to expect him to race prominently during the Easter meeting. He figures among the first acceptors for the Gi eat Easter and. Great, Autumn Handicaps, and aS he has not been nominated for any of the minor events he is a likely runner in both big races. * * ■ • Minerva! ran such a. good! race at Waimaf'e that it, was natural to assume lie would’ do better at Washdyke (says a, southern writer)), but his display was not nearly so impressive and he was always in one of. the rear positions. On this form he cannot he seriously considered 1 for the Great Autumn Handicap, in (which he is handily weighted, hut the changed conditions likely to he in evidence on. the RiiccartOn course may still find him amongst the well fancied, division,

At the Caulfield races on Saturday, Hit the Deck was unplaced in the Neerim Steeples, North Cape was unplaced in the Kaiandra Two-Year-Old Handicap, and Araunah was unplaced in the Brighton Handicap. « * » Princess Doreen and Alight, nvho are to race at the Canterbury jockey Club’s meeting in the Great Easter and Great Autumn respectively, pleas ed in a seven furlong gallop on the plough at Trent Ita m recently. The journey was. run in 1.30 1-5, the last half mile in 525. Princess Dor een was two lengths clear at the half mile and still further opened the gap at the top. of the straight, hut with a characteristic burst over the last, furfong, Might got within, hail a length oi her at the post. « * m The win favorite Sir Abb won the Waipu Handicap in good style. He was badly checked when -Knrnngapni took the lead along the hack from Rom] Appellant, who came back on. him. .However, he was. nicely placed behind Karangapai and Royal Appellant at the turn, and finishing in the most resolute fashion to score by a. length and a quarter .from Tyalt, who also, ran on soundly. Jalldv Karo came from the rear to get third, and Royal Appellant, was fourth, running his best race for some time. Sir Abb won again on Saturday. W # 0 Latest- reports from the Waikato •State that. Gay Seton is training on exceptionally well at that centre amt is confidently expected .to run prominently in the Easter Handicap next Saturday. There is no doubt- regarding Gay Set-on’s speed, proof of this being his second to Gay Blonde in the Railway Handicap last Boxing Day. The only doubt aboup the son of Gay Shield is whether he possesses the ability to run out- a solid ml.e journey. .Tie has won twice within the last month and is in capital condition to tackle the big mile event- next week,, and with only 81b above the minimum he is likely to prove dangerous. w * * There is no more improved performer racing in Canterbury at pro sunt than Quietly (says the Christchurch ‘'Star”), who credited her owner, Air H. L. Bowker, with the Timaru Cup on Saturday., Her evolution as a middle distance perform or has been sudden, but on the way ■she pushed her way through to victory on that occasion there seems reason to believe that she might manage a longer journey than a mile an cl a quarter. She is, however, not engaged i n the Great Autumn. Quietly a four year old chestnut, is by Chief Ruler from Timid, an English mare by Kildare 11. (son of Le Samaritan) from Ardesia, by Spearmint from Flowerer, by Persimmon. ® » « Although the Pahiatua racing ranks of only minor importance on the calendar, it is very probable that there was seen there the winning doublq for Riccarton. At any rate both Rerepai and Cuddle gave ample proof that they are going to run well in the big C.J.C. events. It is unlikely that Cuddle will be asked to run in both the Great Easter and the Great Autumn. Present intentions are to reserve her for the mile and a half on the second day. The Pahiatua Cup may not have been a ron test, but Cuddle carried 9.9 and won running awa*y. Rerepai, over the; Easter distance, performed similarly. It was his first race since he won at Trentham -Jaqf, month, and there was nothing in the field that could make him gallop, despite his burden of 9.9. ■t « « In addition to riding Cuddle at the C.J.C. Easter meeting, R. Reed will be on the‘members of A. McAulay’s team. Reed will be riding at Feilcling on Easter Saturday, and will be on Severe, Round Up and Gay Boy. P. Atkins will do the first day of the Wairarapa meeting on Easter Saturday, and will then leave for Christchurch. He has been engaged for Cranford in the Great Easter, an d will also ride the two-year-old colt Heritage in the Champagne and Challenge Stakes. W. E. Pine will also ride the first day at Tauhercnikau and then go on to Riccarton, where he has been engaged for Inflation in the Great Easter, Chief Marionette in the Great Autumn and also Linguist. T. Webster will be goin o- to Auckland at Easter and has boon engaged for Red Manfred and Haut Mode. R. Marsh is also going to Auckland and will ride H Duco and Plato. W. J. Broughton has as yet not definitely settled on his Easter riding, but it is probable that he will be at Feilding. S. Anderson will be riding at the Wairarapa meeting at Easter.

’ The five-year-old horse Solarium, Winner of the Avondale and Mitchelson Cups in the springy has broken down and is to be turned , out ,for a long -spell. Solarium worked very satisfactorily at Ellerslie recently, but the trouble developed '-subsequently.

Curie has been given a trial over the hurdles at Napier Park, and it is considered there is every pro-spect that he will prove proficient in this department. In 1930-the trainer, W. McKinnon, took King’s Jest, when once a novice, to Ellerslie to win the Great Northern Hurdles, and possibly he will set Curie a similar task.

The each-way favorite Boughal scored a decisive victory io the Stewards’ Handicap at 4Vh.ang.arei. Impasto and Boughal were together in front for about two furlongs, when Boughal drew out and went on to win by a length from Crooning, who. heat Hampton Park by half a he'ad. Lord AVillonyx was a close fourth, followed by Impasto -and Tray Bit, who whs always in the rear after stumbling and losing some lengths at the start. Boughal was too brilliant for the opposition. Crooning got a good run through on the rails at the turn, and stayed on just a shade better than Hampton Park, who was on the outside most of the wav. The twelve starters >n the Timaru Cup included nine Great Autumn candidates, but tile winner. Quietly was not among them. Imperial Spear, Courtyard and Sea F°x, nil failed to stay while Polydora. and Minerva I were not impressive. Tout 1c Atomic did a- little better hut notl as iwell as Silver Sight*. Hunting Go or Kamal Pasha. 'Pile last named will probably find a mile and a half beyond him, and perhaps one of the most impressive autumn trials in the Timaru Cup was that of Hunting Go. The Waslidyke gelding came from the* back to finish third and should see out the Autumn journev, while the big track at Riccarton will ensure -him the necessary room Silver Sight- also, appeared in a very favorable light, and. lie will meet all those bo beat at Wash dyke on more favorable terms fit Riccarton. A tenth Great Autumn candidate seen out at Wnslufyke was Grand Review 1 -, but- she failed in a hack race and does not merit consideration for the Great Autmn.

Only five started in the Mclnnes Alemorial Handicap, and Imamint, the outsider of the field, effected a surprise in winning narrowly from the win favorite Gay Alarigold, Korokio and Bonny Gay led early. Bonny Gay assumed command after, going three furlongs, and carried on the running to the straight entrance, where Gay Alarigold had run up second on the rails, having ha,d a fine run through on the inside at the top. with Imamint and Alonanui handy.. Imamint stayed on besf, in a fine contest to win by a head from Gay Alarigold, who defeated Bonny Gay by a length and a quarter. Alonanui was fourth and Korokio w(ns several, lengths away last. It was Imamint'vs first attempt over a mile and a-quarter, and she finished very solidly after being quietly ridden by the apprentice, I. C. Smith. Gay Alarigold was favored with a beautiful run on the rails, but her big weight /steadied her at the finish. Bonny Gay covered a, lot of ground by lugging out from the rails, otherwise she would probably have won. Korokio also bored out baldly. and this effectually settled her chances, as she dropped right back to the rear -at the home turn.

Of the dozen runners in the Doncaster Handicap at Timaru, eight claim- an engagement in the Great Easter. Capital apparently can ho ruled out of the Riccarton race, and Rebel Star, who lias been operated on for wind trouble, seems unlikely to seo out seven furlong# (comments the Timaru Herald). Silver Streak does not appear to ho right just now and Sam Smith,, though fourth at Wnshdyke, should he held safe by Tizzy and Kamal Pasha. Tuiran was stopping a bit in the Doncaster and may not bo ready for a seven furlongs assignment-. Rebel Chief was making |ijs first appearance after a respite following an accident, and while, he disappointed; his ; admirers he should not be Tizzy is a slow ,jeginner—a,s. has been demonstrated- m her last three races at Wingatui, Oamaru, and AVashdlyke—and she cannot afford to give anything away in an event like the Easter. If the prospects of the eight referred to had been summed up on Doncaster running} Kama] Pasha and Tizzy would have to bo selected!, with a preference for Tizzy if she could begin well. Kama! Pasha is in th 0 ’ Riverton Cup, but the acceptance list for this race mi Thursday morning may indicate that he is to go 1o Riccarton.
