POVERTY BAY ASSOCIATION

FINE SUCCESS ACHIEVED

THE ANNUAL MEETING

There was a large and enthusiastic attendance at tho annual meeting tho Poverty Bay Basketball Assocstion hold in the Borough Council chambers last evening. The Mayor (Mr Jolm Jackson) was in tho chad anj waMnlv congratulated the association -on the- splendid record achieved -during .the past year. The annual report was as follows: • “In presenting the. seventh annual report the executive desires to express gratification of the keenness and -enthusiasm shown by players in making the 1934 season a most successful °ne. Throughout the year, keen interest and competition were maintained in both A and B grades, tho final results being:—A. Grade, Thursday winners; High School Old Girls-; runners-up: Tui and fit: Mary’s Secondary School. Saturday winners: High School Old Girls; runners-up: Tui. B Grade, Thursday winners: Harriers: * runners-up:'. McKenzies. Saturday winners: High School B Harriers.

“King’s Birthday Tournament: — On June 4, the usual ' seven-a-side tournament and! official opening of tho season were held. After a most interesting series of matches High School Old Girls emerged the winners.

, “Dominion Tournament:—The New Zealand Basketball Tournament f°r tho year 1934 was hold in Dunedin, a record number of teams participating. It is most gratifying to record the success of the Poverty Bay Representatives team in winning tho President’s Shieldj the trophy for the winners of the second grade. This enables the Poverty Bay team to apply fnr inclusion in the firstgrade competition for the 1935 tournament, which has been allocated to Wellington. Mrs P. Beale and Miss C. Miller ably represented Hie Poverty Bay Association at the annual meeting of the council held in Dunedin during the course of the tournament. ROBSON CUP MATCHES. • “Teams' Visi’ts: —During the season two matches w'erc played between Wairoa and Gisborn e for the Robson Cup, the local team being successful in retaining the cup on both occasions. The B grade representatives journeyed to Tolaga Bay toward"? the end of the season, playing several matches with the Tolaga. and Manjgntuna teams. Interchange matches were also played between town and country teams at various times during the year. Games Evening:—At the conclusion of the season a games evening .was held, trophies won during the year being presented by the patroness of the association, Mrs W. A. Bowie. “Referees’ Association :—This body has again proved of very great assistance to the association?, and thanks are due to the members for their keenness throughout the season. The formation of a N.Z. Referees’ Association in 1935 will be of especial benefit to all associations. “Finance: —The balance-sheet shows careful and judicious handling of monies The extra heavy expenditure incurred in sending the P.B. representative team to Duned'n, however, leaves only a very small credit balance. “Thanks:—Tn concluding this report. the executive feels that it should place on record its appreciation of the invaluable assistance rendered by all friends of the association, particularly the Mayor and the councillors, St. John Ambulance Association, the referees,, coaches of representative teams, the Press, hon. surgeon (Dr W. A. Bowie) and hon. auditor (Mr G. 11. Scents).” “A VERY FINE RECORD.” Speaking to the report, the Mayor commented that it showed a very fine record for the past* year especially in respect Of such a lerj-r trip as to Dunedin, the putting into effect of Which (spoke volumes for the splendid enthusiasm and' onergv displayed by those responsible. Such a report and balance sheet would be a great credit to any association or club. It was especially gratifying that the players, too, upheld the district’s reputation and Gisborne was very proud indeed of the success achieved. • r '■ The report and balance sheet, were then adopted on the motion of Mrs. G. CONSTITUTION ALTERATIONS Various alterations to the constitution were made, these including a. provision that the president cf the association should bo chairman of tho executive and not actively interested in any club; that nominations for all executive offices should be in the hands of the secretary not later than seven days before the annual mcetir.ig; that each vice-president should be entitled to one vote ■ that those groups cf country teams which have been recognised as sub-associa-tion should pay' an annual fee of 5s for?* affiliationp arid ~that“any. elteration of the constitution shall be' made by’a,'thi'Ae-fifths'majority;.
