SURPLUS OF £2,000,000. AUSTRALIAN P. AND T. DEPARTMENT. (U.P.A. by Elec. Tel- Cony right) (Received April 9, S.lO p.m.) CANBERRA, April 9. The annual report of the Postmaster General’s Department discloses a surplus of £2,000,000 after charging interest on capital investments. The earnings of the department tor the year were £13,232,982 compared with £12,621,265 in the previous year. The postal revenue was 4.56 per cent, higher, but the telegraph branch showed a deficit of £lOl2, which was £60.576 less than the deficit in 193233. The telephone branch showed a surplus of £269,273. While Mrs. Winter Irving was at dinner at her home in Toorak a eat burglar climbed a drainpipe, entered her bedroom upstairs, and stole jewellery valued at £IOOO. COLLISION IN NEWCASTLE HARBOUR. (U.P.A. by Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received April 9, 8.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 9. The inter-Stato cargo steamers Kooyong and Corio collided in Newcastle harbour to-day. The Corio was only slightly damaged but the Kooyong had three gaping holes in her starboard bow.
