A .group of mothers .-stood guard over a bridge- at Tonma-wr village recently and refused to let children pass over (states the London Daily Express). ■ Below tho bridge a .swollen, torrent raced and roared!. On the other side dv&s a sehani with empty shrdlu 'vcm was a school with empty desks. The Totimawr mothers held the bridge all day and would not .lot a- single chid risk the crossing. ;
Education ,officials tried to persuade them to, .adopt a, less belligerent att-i tucie,.' but the women replied by calling a. school strike until the bridge, is repaired. ■ - Tjhe bridge was originally Built .for miners working at the Garth Colliery It is made of wood and is - the only route hy which, a-, large number . of children in the village can reach their school. There - has been a dispute about the maintenance of the bridge.
