The Premier (Mr Stevens) on Saturday, turned the first sod of the Mulwala irrigation canal in the Southern Eiverimv district which,' when completed , will be ,100 miles in long re the longest, in Austialia, and connecting thereto will bo 550 miles of subsidiary channels. The cost of the whole work will be considerably more than. £l,ooo,ooo. It will provide work for eight, years for more than 1000 men.
The canal links rip with, the Hume weir waters, .and'will irrigate ever two million acres of fertile land between Berrigan and Balranald also the whole of the Deniliqriin district The Premier”stated that the cot, of the Hume, weir had- been £5,250,000 and woril t f- be divided between NrijW South Wales arid Victoria.
