Eighteen persons were killed and nine injured when a passenger train collided liead-on until a freight trail at Karanstrogonovo station, near Saratov.
The engines and carriages were reduced to splintered wreckage. Two wagons ignited, impeding the rescue work.
The stationmaster, Konovalov, has been charged with criminal negligence in permitting two trains on the .same track.
