CRIPPLED CHILDREN

INCREASING BY 500 YEARLY IN NEW ZEALAND. INTEREST IN MENTAL REQUIREMENTS URGED. APPEAL TO ROTARIANS. (Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. -MThe need for caring requirements of cripped children referred to by Mr. T. O- List, or of Rotary in New Zealand «beu addressing the members o ChYistchureh Rotary Club to-day. Mr. List told members that a scheme was under consideration lor helping crippled children, and .he appealed for the assistance ot aria ns. “1 would like to see Rotary taking a greater interest in the care ot the crippled children in New Zealand for I do not think the people realise how many cripples there are, said Mr. List. “A committee surveying tne jiosition has found that there are over 5000 crippled children in the Dominion. and that number is increasing i 500 a rear. The children are being cared for fairlv well on the physica side in hospitals, but-on the mental side little or nothing is being done That element in our population uould respond to interest in their welfare. It is marvellous what is hem ra one in other places. In Boston there was a wonderful demonstration of what is beino- done in America. Me want to train the children’s brains so that thev can become useful citizens n America, where crippled children have been employed, they }ia\e icen wonderfully successful, showing that tin- children can respond if S iven P r0 ‘ per attention. The results in America, where Rotarians have taken an interest in the children, have been entirely successful. When the scheme under consideration is submitte *-0 the Rotarv Clubs in the Dominion. I hope it will have the same interest manifested as in America.
