(Special to the Times). In spite of dull and misty weather on Saturday. the Matawai Tennis Club officially opened their courts, and were able to play without, interruption. a Yankee tournament. Participants were' as follows: — Miss D. Scholium and R. Mortleman (owing 5), won 3: lost 2 gamesMrs. Smith and J. Clark (scrj, won 2; lost 3. Mrs. Nivenn and H. Bulst, (2), won 2 lost 2Miss M. W.I. MEETING
The October meeting of the Matawai W.I. wa s held ill the Public Hall on Thursday, Mrs. Burgess presided over an attendance of 12 members, and three visitors. It was decided to co-operate with neighbouring institutes concerning tbe group meetings, several suggestions being recommended to be put before the Group Committee for the next competition for the rose bowl. A very interesting roll call, “The most interesting thing I have read during the Month,” was well responded to. Many interesting subjects, ranging from the description of a walking plant 1 , prophecies, a description of the Great Pyramid, and literary conundrums to several reviews on books. A box of heather, which had arrived from our Scottish link was opened up, and distributed to members. The sprig of white, which came from n ea r Aberdeen, was kept by the president for luck. The purple had been gathered by members of the- Thornton .-.RJ. in Fifeshire on Lomond Hills, at a height of 1700 ft to be given to fellow members of’New Zealand, who live at that height. Ah entertainment committee was formed, and arrangements made fo’r a mens evening to be held on Saturday' October 21. A very comprehensive demonstration was given, by an exmember on, “How to make a’ doorstep from tobacco tins. Further articles for the P.B. Show exhibit were i»romised. Mosdames Bulst and jVlortleman provided a delectable afternoon tfa, and the meeting closed with the sieging of the National Anthem.
