The opinion that, England "'ill h<* the Mecca of' all interested in the motion picture business was expressed by 'Mr. Gordon Ellis, general manager for. Australia and New Zealand for British Empire Elms, Ltd., who is making a brief business trip to the Dominion, following a tour abroad. Mr. Ellis told an interviewer that til© reason for England’s popularity was the financial stresses in America. In Hollywood many studios were working half-time, and with, the stages occupied, English companies .fortified by many famous stars and directors- from Hollywood, had grasped the opportunity to secure representation on the American market. According t 0 Mr. Ellis, the picture business in the near future "ill he revolutionised by a type of colored film v'hich has been perfected in’England, whereby the image in natural color's is thrown 011 tlio screen by means of a mechanical apparatus on the projector. Mr. Ellis said considerable impetus had: been given to Australian productions of the Government, offering a prize of £2OOO for the best picture to be produced during the coming year, arid four studios are now working continuously. Mr. Ellis spoke in the highest term s of New Zealand scenics, and said lie could, see no reason why feature productions could not. be made in the Dominion. It was his opinion that in futureall, countries would be living on their own productions, as was the case. now in Franco and Germany.
