lu these days oi Franco-German estrangement -a. pleasing incident is reported from the village of A-scaup-oine, near, Valenciennes, which the Germaiis occupied in wartiime under an officer wlio showed many kindnesses to the inhabitants. He afterwards married a French woman, and settled in the village. The v illagers ar.e now idignani at the 'officers’ sentence of 15 days’ imprisonment for an -alleged assault on :his wile. In addition to agitating for reduction of tile sentence, the villagers have arranged a banquet ui his honor when lie leaves gaol.
