NEW MAGISTRATE
MR. E. WALTON FOR GISBORNE. THAMES - JLARR.IST.EE. Advice- was received in Gisborne yesterday that the Minister for Justice, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, had' approved the appointment of Mr. Ernest Walton, barrister and solicitor el Thames and Ngatea-, as Stipendiary Magistrate to fill the -vagpney caused by the death of Mr. P. TI. Harper, S.M. Mr. Waltpn will take oyer his new duties at an early date. Mr. Walton is only 42 years of age, nnd/iva.s born at Thames in 1891. Re was educated at Thamcis High School, jraining a Jpnior National Scholarship and. a pass with credit in the junior Public Service examination, [n 1907 lie Joined the Justice Department and served in the court offices at- Thames, Paoroa, Hastings, Napier Dannevirlre and Christ church. Leaving the Public Service in 19,16, he joined (be staff of Messrs. Johnstone-. Mills. and Joyce, Christchurch, and while with that legal firm qualified, and was admitted as a solicitor. In 1918 he became managing clerk for Sir James Parr, then practising in Auckland with Mr. Rlomfiold. lie subsequently became managing clerk for Messrs. Bam ford, and Brown Auckland, and in 1920 commenced Practice as a barrister and solicitor at Ngatea. On the constitution of the IJaurnki County in 1926, Air. Walton, combined the duties of county clerk with bis practice until 1926 He lafbr became county chairman and a member of the Thames Hospital Board, and has been consulting solicitor to most of the- drainage and other local bodies in the district.
