Speaking at the opening of a new chapel at St-. Mary’s yesterday, Archbishop o’Shoa paid a tribute to the courage and fortitude ot. the Napier people- in the rocontrnotion oi the- town after the earthquake.
“A little over two years ago,” he said, “you were all involved in a terrible loss of life and property, caused by the earthquake. - h.il disaster brought all classes and section--of the community together, and although we. can ln-.ver bring back the valuable lives sacrificed in the calamity a splendid’ spirit has been created, duo no doubt, -to. the, sacrifices mado and the splendid respun so oi the people in tho on: urgency.
“In spite of fhe world-wide depression, your city is rising from the mins, and will be far more beau 1fn 1 than before Iho , .lesfuction. 1 lie wonderful progress made spc-aks volumes for tbo determiim.tmn of iho 'people. f am cpiilo' certain Ibat in a few years’ tune the restoration ° r the material loss will to ccmplot;, land all trace of the great disaster will be entirely obliterated. . “It was my good fortune -o visit San Francisco nine years after it was destroyed by. a ’quake, and by tlmt time it bad lost all signs of tbo calamity. A new and far more beautiful city bad arisen from the ruins. The signs are fha+ the same will be the case with Napier, oven before nine years have elapsed, ami that the people of Napier will show tbo same courage, determination, and fortitude as the people of Ban Francisco.’’
