SHOCKING MISHAP
SMASH AT PORIRUA RAILWAY CROSSING.
CAR STRUCK BY TRAIN,
THROWN ON TO ANOTHER ENGINE. 4 KILLED AND 3 SERIOUSLY INJURED. VEHICLE REDUCED TO FRAGMENTS. (Press' Assn. Extraordinary). WELLINGTON, May 21. Four Were killed and three seriously injured in a smash at Pdrirua railway* crossing at 6 o’clock this evening, when a motor car was struck by a train and thrown on to the engine of another train standing in the siding. The killed are —
Mrs. Frank Lincoln, Palmerston North. Mrs. Lincoln’s daughter, aged four years. Mrs. Frances Lena Gaskin, Palmerston North, a daughter of Mr. U. Morris, of Eketahuna. Miss Enright, who boarded with Mrs Gaskin.
The injured are—
Frank Lincoln, 26, Palmerston North compound fracture of the ribs, head injury and shock. Francis Lincoln, 3, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs. Lincoln, injuries to head and hips. Eric Hobroyd, 23, Palmerston North.
The cur was struck by the train and thrown into the engine of a stationary train and carried for a distance of about twenty yards between the two trains.
The car was reduced to fragments and the debris was thrown over both sets of rails. One portion ol' tlio car was tossed up on the platform. The- framework of tlio carriages of both trains was damaged.
