Mr. John Hodgkin son, a very Mcl former resident of T’oit Ahuriri, passed away at Auckland on Saturday of last week. Deceased -resided i n X a pier for 47 years, and was connected with various works in and around the district, harbour dredging, thp trawling ijidustry, the building of the olcT West shore bridge, and the present Rcdclyffe bridge! Ho was also a member of the Ancient Oi'dei of Foresters for the past 55 years, and was a past chief. He celebrated his golden wedding four years ago. Deceased' leaves a widow, five aons and three daughters to mourn their loss. The sons arc Messrs, E. 5. (Napier), E. 11. (Dunedin). T. and A. (Wellington) and .1. R. (Auckland). The daughters arc Mrs. Ellerhy (Gisborne), Airs. Tute (Frankton) and Mrs. MnJvOyina (Auckland).
Twenty-one years’ continuous service as a. member of the Legislative Council will be completed by Sir Francis Bell to-day, when iiis present seven year term of appointment ends. Several other Legislative Councillors arc duo to retire' in the near future. The terms of the Hons. C. J. Carrington and J. A. Hanan expire, on June. 17. Sir James Allen will complete his term on June 1 oi next yoa.i. Later in the same month Sir E. Alitclielsoh, Colonel Smith, and the Hon. Robert Scott will complete their .seven years. The present council has « membership of 22. Retirements h?y\® itaken heavy toll on the strength o' the Chamber during the past few years, there having been 35 members when the Coalition Government assmned office in 1930. R.A.
