OVERLOADING OF SHEEP LORRIES. WHY PEOPLE. SHOULD PROTECT ANTSCLLS, CANON HALL SAYS MAY HAVE SOME KIND OF SPIRIT. The annual' meevdiig ol the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals was held in the Orange Ballon Wednesday evening,’ the Rev, Canon Hall presiding over a good attendance. The secretary presented the annual report which, on the motion of Mrs. M. Taylor, seconded by Alts. T. Terry, was * carried unanimously. The balance-sheet was then presented and adopted. dMr. A. B. Scott said that the only thing lie could find wrong with the balance-sheet was that there was a credit balance and lie would like t° see tho society spending money t o its full capacity.

Canon Hall assured Mr. Scott that the committee would soon miu - ome way of spending money. (Laughter.) The written report of one- of the inspectors, Air. J. B. Poyiiter. who was unable to be present, was presented by the secretary. The other inspector. Air. G. B. Carter, gave a verbal report. Both reports wore on much tlio sumo lines, dealing with visits lb the Coast among the Alaon's and to the surrounding districts. Various minor offences had been dealt with and two serious offences had been taken before?' the police and in both cases the offenders were fined. Mr.. Carter said j 'c had received various complaints from persons interested iu the society about the transportation of sheep ?n lorries as to the overloading °t trucks. Tie said this wa s a hard matter to stop, for it was sometimes very difficult to get the correct number in the trucks. He said that the inspectors should have some distinguishing badge and then the public would know who they were. .

Canon Hall, in a short address, said that when we talked about the lower animals wo wer o inclined to stress too much the word ‘‘lower. As wc had evolved from animals and were more or less animats plus a s<)U t or spirit there was a possibility that animals, too. had souls, at least some sort of spirit. In this case, he said, there would be all tho move reason why we should he kind lo animals and protect them. Air. Scott suggested that, in order to instill more into children the necessity of being kind to animals, an ossav competition be commenced at the schools. Air. Hill, in endorsing Air. Scott’s suggestion, asked the secietaiv to obtain information and bring the matter before the- committee at the first meeting. Airs. Terry said several people had asked her if anything could be dono with regard to overloading ol sheepcarrying trucks. After a general discussion, a ’notion was passed empowering the secretary to write to the Press at the beginning of next season warning lory drivers against overloading.
