COMMITTEE MEETS DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION. ANXIETY AFTER QUAKE. MATTER TO BE DISCUSSED WITH HAWKE’S BAY BOARD. Tim position of the upper portion of the main school at Gisborne, which was damaged by the recent earthquake and has now been vacated on the assumption that it is unsafo, was discussed in detail at a meeting held in the. school last evening, and as a result the Director of Education will discuss question with the Hawke’s Bay Education Board on Friday next. 4b the meeting there were present members of tbe Gisborne school committee, and the, Director of Education, Air. Lambourne, the Depairtnient’s architect, Mi. Savage, local representatives on the Hawke s Bay Education Board, Messrs. J. SWauchop and T. A. Coleman; the District Public Works Engineer Mr O. G. Thornton; the Public V oiks Department supervisor, Air. J. AleCullock; and the local architects, Messrs. J. H. Burr and F. HForge. The chairman of the school committee, Mr. J. H. Sunderland, presided. . Durum the afternoon the Directoi of Education and the Department’s architect thoroughly • inspected the building. . , After a full and frank discussion, in which various opinions were expressed, as to the safety of- the building, Air. Lambourne said’ that' the Department thoroughly appreciated the 'spirit actuating the • committee and the householder's generally in regard to the school. He. bad .been advised that the building had stood the shocks. fairly well, but-there was also the psychological aspect' to bo considered.
