A fatal railway crossing collision occurred at Mataugi, six miles Rom Hamilton this afternoon, when a motor car, driven by John ..James Patterson, of Manaia, Taranaki, was struck by the Franktoii-Gambridg® train. A jiassenger in thc car, Mr.-,. N. Jones, aged 35 years, wife of Sir. Narkett Jones; formerly of Manaia, received grave head injuries and she died within half an hour. The driver, Patterson, escaped with cuts about tbe face and shockThe engine struck the motor car with terrific force on the near side, where Mrs. Jones was riuing. The motor car, a large closed model, was carried for about 20 yards ou tho cowcatcher of tne engine and was then thrown clear, reduced almost to wreckage.

The train was pulled up smartly, and Mrs. Jones and Patterson were extricated from the wreckage. Mrs. Jones succumbed tc her injuries while being given attention. Patterson, who wa s suffering mainly from shock, wa s not sent to hospital. Patterson, who owns extensive * dairy farms at Manaia, and also near Morrinsville, was travelling from Taranaki to his Waikato farm. His only passenger was Airs.
