MR BRUCE’S VISIT TO LONDON

PE R MANENT AI IN IST ER

UNLIKELY

(U.P.A. h.v Elec. Tei Oopy'righld

LONDON, Feb, 21

Air S. M. Bruce, as a guest at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce annual luncheon, made the first public pronouncement on future Australian representation in London, saying:—

'■| cannot believe that the system of maintaining a Cabinet Minister in London will be extended bv Australia or followed by other Dominions. I am here as a Minister still in the Government to do certain specific job's, after which I will return to Australia. We may temporarily continue keeping some Minister here, hut are unlikely always to he- able to spare one. Consequently, we probably will revert to the '/ stem .of High Commissioner, which, after all, worked fairly well.”

In a subsequent interview, Air Bruce declined to amplify his luncheon remarks regarding the policy of London representation, but the specific jobs referred to may now be regarded as almost entirely financial.

Mr Bruce, however, commenced to occupy the official residence in Ennismore Gardens only in January. This, with other factors may he interpreted ns meaning a stay of at least another three months.
