PROPOSED RESTRICTION ON EXPORTS TO BRITAIN.

With reference to the suggested restriction on butter imports into the United Kingdom. Mr. Forbes said the position bad been- further discussed with members of the Dairy Board, who again emphasised as strongly ns possible their definite view that any restriction of New Zealand butter would- have a disastrous effect on the dairying industry. The Board was of opinion that every endeavour should be made to avoid any policy oi fixed quotas applicable to the output from New Zealand. “The Government, having regard especially to the existing local conditions. strongly concur in the Board’s view,'' staled Mr. Forbes, "and the. High Commissioner lias been requested .to do bis. utmost to prevent the adoption of tile proposed restrictions. and as a basis for further negotiations, has been advised to indicate that the Dominion is prepared to adopt some arrangement of reduced shipments for a short period, on condition that, Australia reduces her shipments and. that the quantities of foreign butter are restricted also”.
