NIGHTWATCTIMAN SUFFERS BURNS. ( 'Brass' Assooiatinn.j PALMERSTON N., January 10. Serious burns on the body were suffered by George Tremaine, 45, a nightwatcbman, in a fire which occurred at bis small house in Florence avenue shortly before 1 o'clock this morning. Mr. Tremaine stated that he had loft'a candle burning, and on returning to the bouse found that it had fallen among some papers, setting these >4ighT. -In his-attempts to extinguish the blaze he slipped and fell into the flames, suffering numerous burns, but was able to summon the brigade, which confined the damage to the room' where' the outbreak occurred. At an inquest bold at Kaitaia this morning, a verdict of accidental drowning was returned concerning the death of John Youngston, 24, a single man,’ who, with a companion, occupied a canoe which was swamped in the Awanui river yesterday.
