ROBBERIES BY ESCAPEE

WANGANUI, January 12

Charles Bennett, the recaptured prisoner, pleaded guilty in .the Police Court this moming to two charges of breaking, entering and theft. three charges of theft, and two of wilful damage. On. the first two charges ho was committed to the Auckland Supreme Court for sentence, and on ihe other charges was convicted and discharged.

ALLEGED ASSAULT IN STREET,

(Press Association.) ROTORUA, January 12,

Alaiisel James Jones, a middleaged taxidermist, was tliig morning charged with assaulting Thomas AleCone so as to cause him bodily harm, and also with being a rogue and a vagabond, and having been armed with an offensive instrument with felonious intent.

The case arose out of a sensational assault in the street last , night. Jones, armed with a weighted canc, met the young mail as he came out of a house in Pukaki street, accompanied by a. girl, and struck him a violent blow oil the head. AY hen the police were called he walked away. The man and girl followed up. and near (he centre of the town Jones again, attempted to assault them, hut was knocked out by a nearby spectator and taken to the police station.

In tlm Police Court Jones was granted a remand until Monday, hail being allowed, self £IOO, and one surety of £IOO. He fs tu report to t.lie police daily.
