INCREASED ATTENDANCE

Undoubtedly the most successful yet hold, the Gisborne- Waterside 'Workers’ Union picnic carnival was held ’ yesterday at Scott’s Reserve, Kaitoratnhi.-■ Ample illustration of, the great of this fixture was provided by the very large atren dance.• this far exceeding past years. A special train ran out to the reserve front Cdsborne and the accommodation on this was taxed to the limits. The--,creche-children, as in past years, were v |,ho guest? of the union fdr'tho'day. 'and had a wonderful day’s fun. The City Band had offered their services for the day, and they provided a very enjoyable series of items, these greatly enhancing the pleasure of the large gathering. With, test. cricket so much in the I lithe-light lately, the union decided the opportunity was too good to miss, so a special match was arranged between teams ' representing the ships’ men and the lightermen,• this being an entirely new feature no the

picnics. After very keen piny, -wliioii some- very promising talent the lightermen- won hy-.four wickets. A lengthy race'.programme drew large entries, particularly, the threelegged races, in which four and five lieats were required.-.* .The Mayor, Mr. D. V. Coleman-. ALP., was presoph. and. participated in., the “Old A^knV race, being very narrowly fceaten into second place. All the. good things dear to adults nr. well as children were i provided by the union and. so'great was the attendance, fresh supphes had t o he obtained during the day. particular ■attention, as usual, was given to the entertainment of the children, and one and all of the youngsters agreed that it- was a wonderful day s outing- , The thanks of the picnic committee are expressed to Air. R. Scott (who allowed free use "of the reserve), to the business people of- the town who made the picnic, possible by their -vert- generous donations, <o the people’of Waipaoa who' gave every aseiatance in connection with the mrxiic, to Air.
