OLYMPIC CARNIV AL TO-NIGHT
On account of the large number of entries in. the 100 yards Stonoham handicap, it was resolved to. swim the heat events off at the club night held last evening. The results of the heats, seven swimmers taking; part in each, has made the following qualify for the semi-finals to-night: First semifinal; O. 'Martin 9sec., H. Tlio" first events "on " the programme will bo the seven championship races, and competitors are requested to ,b e available at 8 p.m. Championship dives have been altered and men .com. p editors must nominate their seven optional and ladies five optional by 5 p.m. to-day. On account of the lengthy programme of events to-night competitors ar© notified that no post, entries will now be received for any of the events.
The first river race of the season was held last evening for the lie Costa Cup over a distance of 300 yards from the monument to the Pec! St. Bridge. Ten competitors started, the event being won by J. Beckett in smin. 4sec. off scratch, with W. Parley losco., second, and JL Green sor., third. Miss McKfiight, the only lady competitor, was in the Fad for over 200 yards, hut the strong ebb tide allowed tho .back-markers to come through, Beckett leaving '-he field :vr ihe finish to win by 20 yards.

Advice was received yesterday by Mr D. Aliller, bon. secretary of i.he Gisborne Swimming Club, io tho atfect that Gordon Bridson, the A nekland champion swimmer, will be unable to pay bis intended visit, to Gisborne. Bridson has bad to undergo a slight operation and, by doctor’s orders, must retrain from serious swimming for a month or two. In 4'iow of this set-back to his training, Bridson has advised the chib to relinquish any idea of seeing him in Gisborne this season.
