FATAL DOSE OF POISON RELIEF WORKER DEAD YOUNG DILI. IN HOSPITAL (Press A•'.sociiinor..; A UCKLAND, ,1 an. 11. A iragic happening at Waitakero this afternoon, involved the death of a relief worker, dames €. Allen, and tlxo narrow escape from death of a girl of 16. The circumstances point to the fact that thoy both took poison, believed to have been strychnine. The girl, Florence Annie Goodall, iived with her parents, Mr and Airs B. Cfoodall, about a mile from the Waitakero railway station. Goodall had been employed at tho local brick yards, but more recently be lias been foreman of the relief workers’ camp at Waitakero. Alien wa 3 one of tlie workers under him and t o-day lie had a day. off. About 3.30 this afternoon, a neighbour of Goodall’s hurrying to camp summoned him with all speed to his homo with, the news that his daughter and Alien had been taken suddenly ill and were in much pain,apparently from poisoning. Airs Goodall was absent in the city for the day. Emergency relief measures were taken and the two sufferers were brought promptly to town in a private car, but Allen expired as the car wa a passing along Karangahapc road to the hospital. Miss Goodall was taken there and late to-night the hospital authorities reported that her condition showed some improvement. Allen was a married man aged about 38, whose home was in Ponsonhy. It is stated that ho had been payjpg the girl Gooda'S, his attentions, and that she did pot at all welcome them. This afternoon he took tlie opportunity of visiting her wTiilo her mother was away and oy some means —it is Dolieved by offering her a glass of wine—ho induced the gird to take, poison while, at the same time, be drank a dose himself.
