TOKOMARU BAY COURT

A protracted sitting of the Police Court was held 011 Monday before Messrs S. G. Doig and R. G. 8. Hale, J.’sP., when various charges were preferred against. a number oi jocal Natives. Proceedings lasted Irbm 10 a.m. until nearly 81 p.m. and resulted: —

Wi Pourjki Hui Hui (Mr Todd) who pleaded not guilty, was charged with theft of a bale of rope, the property of the N.Z. Shipping Do. from the hold of the R.M.S. Eangitata in August, of last year. He was convicted and fined £l, and costs £1 11s. A charge of receiving m connection with the sam e information was withdrawn.

Peia Collier was also enlarged with alleged theft and receiving stolen property. The defendant conducted his own case and pleaded not, guilty. After hearing lengthy evidence, the charges were dismissed, the Bench 'stating that there was some element of (doubt, the benefit of which, the} considered, should go to the defendant -
