THEFT OF £1415. WIDOW ROBBED BY SALESMAN. li-ress Association 's CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 10 Thirteen charges of theft involving a total of £1415 were preferred against Charles Edgar McPeak, 43, a- salesman; in-the Police Court this morning. . The victim of tlic alleged thdft was Mrs. Mary Orr, a widow; of Fejndalton, whom, it was /said, McPeak induced to’’ invest money in company shares. In all the police stated that McPeak obtained £3OOO fpom Mrs. : Orr who received value for only £I6OO. A detective gave evidence that the accused had said that he. h :l d speculated with the money not. accounted for, and lost it.
The accused pleaded guilty. and was committed for sentPJU’o.

STOLE £3O FROM GIRT

A ship’s officer whose name the magistrate suppressed pleaded guilty in the Police Court to-day to the theft of a wallet- containing £3O. The police said accused had been friendly with complnnant’s sister, and he frequented their house. After paying £4 3s to the landlady he lost the rest of the money at the races. He was unemployed and had never been in trouble before.
The probation officer said it was really a family affair, and complainant:' dixl not. desire restitution. The probation offieer said accused held a first mate’s 'certificate' and if publicity were given ,he would never secure another position. Accused was admitted to probation fop 12 months.
