FARMING COSTS
PERMANENT REDUCTION ESSENTIAL
MR. GOODFELLOW’S SOLUTION
(Press Association.)
WHANGAREI. Jan 10
“New Zealand should carry out the Ottawa agreement forthwith by a drastic all-round reduction in Cus tom duties and especially in favor of British goods; sell all suitable Government land; sell all suitable to allow native lands to be sold, all such land to be sold by auction for cask and with improvement clauses, and further reduce the cost, of Government, co'.fluty council, and municipal expenditure,” said Mr. U illiam Good follow in a statement issued last evening. What was required, ho said, was not temporary assistance for the filmier by means of inflation of currency or exchange, .or a subsidy oil exports pa-id with borrowed mdnoy, but a permanent reduction in farm costs. Farming must lie made sufficiently attractive to (ihs'orh) an increasing population. The cities were too large in view of the reduced national income.
Some improvomrfni' in prices was expected .but dairy produce probably would be down to the pre-way level.
