FUXNIEST-LOOKIXG RACEHORSE

IN ENGLAND

ENTERED IN THREE CLASSICS

U.P.A. by Elec Te). CYipyrightA LONDON, Jan. S

Named after the famous clown. Crock, reputedly the funniest looking racehorse in England lias been on +ered in throe classics, the Two Thousand Guineas, the Derby, and the St. Leger.

Crock’s markings are similar to those used bv the jester. The face is white from the eves to the mouth, and the legs are partially white, as though wearing spats.

Crock was sired by Solario which was sold for 47,000gns last year, from Speedy.

Tetri]], the trainer, expects Crock to become a valuable racehorse despite bis comic appearance.

Adams who took Sunny Sky, Sunny Bachelor and Merry Damon to the Auckland summer meeting, has. decided to sot up as a public trainer- at Ellcrslie. This trainer has had a fair amount-of 'success with his horses in recent years and as Ms capabilities are well known lie should soon got a useful team together. . ...

Following are: theAentries 'for the Takapuna- Jockey Club 'Handicap, of 270sbys., nine furlongs :: Chief Joy, Master , Brierly, Lady 1 Quesf Merry Damon, Trislifia. Gay Idea, Tea Chat, Royal Doultqn, Paganeßi. 'Teels, Jalldy Karo, ‘Sunny Sty, Glen Rata. Speedmint,-Maori .Boy,- Great; Emblem . Eageri Rose,- Tarporley. . ..

The win and place system betting will bo in operation at the Wellington Racing;' -Club’s summer meeting next week. Tjie decision to adopt tlie new, system was made by the stewards at a meeting yesterday.—P.A.

Tin Lap, who is duo to make Ilia iirst appearance this season at Thames raced successfully on that courso last season as a two-year-old, registering a - win and a second in the only two x-aees that he contested. In his nextstart ho ran second to Master Brierly in the Rcimie Stakes at Rotorua, but has not raced s ljico thou. If produced at his best next week Tin lap should give a good account of himself’.

The records of light harness racing show conclusively that the straightout trotter has little hope of winning when pitted against good pacers. Of course, there have been occasional exceptions to prove tlie rule, but they are at rare (intervals, aud the good pacer will beat the good trotter 99 times out of 100. In the Auckland Cup the once brilliant Petorwali took liis place against 21 pacers but never once diii lie threaten to be In the picture, being outclassed from the start. Admittedly, Peterwah was not jn his best form, aud his trainer expressed the opinion before the meeting began that- he would have liked another month to get the horse ready Just now there seems to he a craze for smashing trotting records, and if Bis trainer keeps on with Peterwah and specially prepares him for a flying mile there 'is a good chance of the 2.9 recorded by Todd Lo-nzia at Addington going by the board,. Provided he was right and trotted solidly, Peterwah would trot a merry eight furlongs. * * s During the past couple of weeks J. Buchanan has been speeding Brampton up a bit faster an 1/is work and the bay gelding may be competing at the Thames meeting. It is some time shico this horse won a race, his lastsuccess being in the President’s Handicap at Dargaville just on two years ago. As ho is now in Bis eighth year further improvement can hardly be expected of Brampton, and he will have to be carefully placed in order to pay his way in the future.

in. most of her races this season Reviver has shown abundance of speed over the early stages, but appears to lack staying ability. With a little improvement in tb'-s respect the daughter of Peaeli Brandy is likely to win a hack sprint event. Reviver claims an engagement in the Tapu Handicap at Thames, a race that should suit her admirably. She 'is a very fast beginner, and a\s the field is likely to be a large one, her early speed will enable her to keep clear of trouble during the race.

* * How hard fit is for any horse to win two handicap events at oim meeting has been remarked upon many times. It is said that a rise of 31b. in weight is equal to one length' over six furlongs, and lib. a length at a mile- and a-half or two miles. Whether this is correct or not is a matter ot opinion, but it is certain that a few pounds extra weight will see a first day’s winner finish nvell out of a place another day. At the Auckland Cup meeting there were only two horse's to win twice in handicap races. One was the two-year-old Dole and the other the hurdler Prince of. Orange. There were some apparently easy wins recorded in other handicaps, but the winners did not succeed ugatu. though several raced well.

• • * The Chief Ruler filly Pelagia displayed a lot of speed in her races at EUerslio but found the class a. hit too good lor. her. She is engaged in juvenile events at Thames, and if started should ho hard to heat, as the class io weaker than that which she had to contend uttli at Ellei slie. So far Pelagia Las contested eight races without registering a win, and if she gets beaten at Parawai «o excuse* can he made lor her.

The Thames-trained hack Blauloid, who has only had a limited amount ol racing, promises to develop into a good stake-earner when 110 has had a bit more experience. Like the majority of Acre’s progeny,- this gelding lias plenty of speed, and when he becomes thoroughly seasoned better results can bo expected of him. He is a solid-looking customer and just the right type to eventually make a name for himself as a hurdler if given an opportunity later on. Blanford will contest hack events at tire Thames nice Sing and is sure to get plenty ol support.

On Top, the six-year-old gelding by Surveyor iU’oiu Te Moti, iu J. Gray s stable, dropped dead during a gallop at Takanini. Jjudden by the stable apprentice, J. McFarlane, the chestnut gelding was going nicely over a sprint d'istaneo until a furlong from the post, when he appeared to lose the power of his hind legs and l'e-U. He expired immediately, but when examined no fractures of any lriml were evident. At his last start On Top .won the Pirongia Hurdles at the Waiapa. meeting, and gave every judication, of developing into a ■ firstclass hurdler.

Alter final payments the following remain in the Wynyard Plate, of 275 soys, and sweepstake of 3sovs. eac , ■seven' furlongs : Psychologist, Delrain, Lapstone, Merry Lap, Lucidus, Moonfleet, King’s Kuave 8.9, Master Brierly, Miss Lorraine, Prolyxo, Gay Marigold, ; Mungatoon. Broken Rule, Regardez, Landlubber, Arawa Rose 7.13, Gay llrouey. 7.7.

A young, hurdler, Mr. S'. Woottou's YLjiotul 3 showed extra-ord i nal T 1u licence and niuilfleness; in extracting himself from a dangerous situation in the course of a races’.at Liverpool. As the field, approached the last jump, another runner • bored Yu ford to such an extent, that he seemed likely to ho. pushed over the rails. He, saw the danger, and so jumped the rails.out of itbe course-. Before-his jockey, S. lughani, . had recovered- from liis surprise; -Yuford jumped- hack again- into the ■ racecourse: ' --
