MOTORING.
BRAKING INVENTION
Motorists often find difficulty in maintaining the individual adjustments with sufficient accuracy to ensure that each nf the four brakes will carry out its proper share of the work. U- is. therefore, of interest to note i !;at a clever invention has been patented in England whereby each of the brakes can he independently adjusted from the dashboard, and that indicators can bo included to show the load whicU each brake is carrying. In each of the four rods or cables used in operate the brakes an hydraulic adjusting device is interposed which embodies the levers., one of which is worked from the pedal, while the other is connected to the brake concerned. The bosses of these lovers are provided with inclined cam surfaces which engage together. The angular movement between the two levers will cause the Ijosses to he forced apart, and this action results in pressing a sliding plunger against a diaphragm at the back of the device. Behind this diaphragm there is a supply of fluid connected hy a pipe line to a gauge and screw-down adjuster on the dash. If the levers are first, set at a certain angle subsequent wear of t !, e brakes can readily be adjusted h screwing down the dashboard control. which serves to force flic fluid into the space behind the diaphragm and presses ihe cams together. When the brakes are in use the load which is applied to each of them reacts through the earns upon the plunger and diaphragm, and can he recorded hy pressure gauges on the dash.
