NOTES AND NEWS

The despatch in the Juvenile Handicap at Hastings was delayed through Hunting Jay being most fractious at the barrier. Finally ho was brought up to the tapes again.to receive a good start when the field was sent away. Senior was first' away, being followed by Slippery, Hunting Jay and Royal Higbne’ss. Racing across the top Passion Fruit improved his position, Hunting Jay taking the lead at this stage. A. wonderful race followed after the field entered' the straight, both Hybiscus and Parisian Fruit making a great effort after coming through the field. Hunting Jay was equal to the occasion to prevail against Slippery, who was well ridden to win by a length and a-half. Hybiscus wars threequarters of a length further back for third. Passion Fruit was fourth from Bay Tree.

In the New Year Handicap at Hastings the field broke away from the tapes in. a perfect ‘ line, and as they raced pa'st the stand Tahorna .was leading from Bramblctorn, Goshawk, Sylvan Dell and Chopin. Running across the top saw False Scent and Tareha the loading pair with Stitch in a handy position. Once in. the straight False Scent was hotly challenged, and looked as jf be would hold out, when Stitch coming through drew level, and in a great finish flashed pa’st the post half a length ahead. Speed also got up over the last few yards to finish half a length behind False Scent. Tareha, who ran a good race, finished imirth.

Concentrate mav now be on the decline, but his form' will justify him being kept well mi the right side for events at Wellington.

}ferry Damon, the winner of the Plunket Handicap, on the second day at Auckland, is ten years oid. and te is the oldest hor«e racing in good fiat rnf.p company in the Dominion at present. Tic' is by Folyclamon from Merry Roe. by Soult from Erey Poe, a sister to* Problem. whose progeny included Solution, a great winner m Xew Zealand and Australia. Merry Danum commenced racing as a two-ycar-old. having four wins and several placing* -in-that season, and lie has been at it ever since. As a seven-year-old be had twenty starts, winning more than once at a mile and a emu-tor. He visited Ricearton that season winning tlie Sockburn Handicap. while in the Great Autumn Handicap he carried 8.8, and was beaten a head by Gay Crest, 7.0. .Irish Lancer, winner of the St. Andrew's Handicap, the chief event at the Dunedin meeting, is an imported horse, who carries the colors of the Dunedin owner, -MV. A. H. pislni. He made two appearances at Biccarton last month, running second to Silver Scorn, in the Spring Plate and then winning the .foe-key Club Handicap. Those, two performances stamped him as more than useful and during the last few weeks his track work at Wingatui lias confirmed the high opinion formed-of him when lie raced at Biccarton. 'When imported horses arc given a. chance, they me liable to go on improving and it will be no surprise if Irish Lancer works his way to a high place before the end of the season. He may. in fact, develop into one of the Dominion s best horses.

Good news is to hand ' regarding Fast Passage. In a brief note, acknowledging a, congratulatory . telegram (from the Christchurch writer "Argus”) on the success of Fast Passage in the Auckland Cup, Sir .Cluii* Clifford states that: ."The. mare is; not as had as we first thought, arid, it is possible that she may race again.” This news will be welcomed, by racing men in all parts of tlie Dominion. The performances of Fast Passage during the last few months have made her a great public favorite and there will be wide satisfaction if she can be produced to win other races before it is necessary to retire her. ■» -* The Mnnawntu Clip winner, Sponr. ful. was unable to fulfil his engagement at the Wnirarnpni meeting as lie injured n log which filled badly, and he had to be stopped in his work. The mishap came at an unfortunate time, as Rpearful was right in form again after a long spell of outs. He is recovering, and it is hoped to have him in work again in' a few days in view of the .Wellington Cun. Unless ho gets going again nnickly his Treuthnm prospects are likely to ho prejudiced, as lie is a gelding who does well and needs plenty of work. B. H. Morris has been engaged to vide In’ in in the Wellington Cup.
