BUTCHERS BEGIN IN SOUTH.

NO UNIONISTS OFFERING IN WELLINGTON.

-According to advice received on Wednesday by the Wellington Meat Export Company, killing began at works io Otago and Southland on Tuesday. In Wellington, however, union men failed to begin work on Wednesday following a meeting held In Petone on the previous day. The A teat Export Company was informed through the South Island Freezing Companies’ Association that union slaughtermen began work in Otago and Southland at the following establishments: — Mataura (Southland), 20 men. It is reported that in each case subsidiary departments are being manned by union labor.

The management of the Wellington Moat Export Company intends to put in more chain rails and will be prepared to handle a rush of killing, whatever happens.

Tuesday's tally was 4600, but this time last year 7000 a day were being killed. For the four years prior to last year the aotual killing for the months of December averaged 65,000. Last year, which was an exceptionally early year, 75,000 were killed in December. More stock will be killed in January than in December.
