SWIMMING

GISBORNE CLUB’S YEAR.

“MOST SUCCESSFUL YET’’

RECORD MEMBERSHIP

“From the swimming point of view, the - season lias proved to be tho 'mosb successful yet 'experienced”, states the thirteenth annual report of tjie Gisborne Surf and Swimming Club, to be presented at the annual meeting to-morrow evening. “With a record .membership, the: entrios for tho various events at the club’s carnivals were larger than in past years, one event in particular draw ing .no fewer than 30 competitors. At one carnival 70 members of the club took part. It was gratifying to nobtico tb e large increase in competitors in tjio ladies’ events, and it is to be hoped that the lady members of the club will endeavour to maintain the standard they have now set. “Five carnivals were held by the club”, the report continues, “whip' in addition the executive and carnival officials conducted a carnival for tho Did Students’ _ Association, and also staged a carnival on behalf of the Returned Soldiers’ Association in appreciation of its assistance in the Mcßae Baths. Four river races were bold, all attracting good fields and being closely contested.

“Tbe club membership shows an increase of 5S as compared with last season, the total number of financial members being 174. “A team of swimmers from the Herotanngft club, Hastings, paid the dub a visit and appeared a a carnival to eomptto for tb 0 Ferguson Cup. Although unfavorable weather marred tfie attendance, the swimming was of an exceptionally high stamL ard, and tho inter-club scratch events proved to bo tlic most exciting races held during the season. Our club was fortunate in regaining the cup, the result depending on the water polo match, of which tho final scores were 4- to 1 in Gisborne’s favor. Members are already looking for ward to a return visit during the coining season.

Club championships held resulted as follows: 50 yards men, J. Miller and. D. W. McKeague, equal; 100yds. and 220yds. men. J. Miller; dive, E. H. Oliver; 50vds intermediate, H. Singer; 50yds. boys, B. Kahlenmerg; 50yds. ladies. Misses F. Richardson and Rita Miller, equal. “At the Hawke’s Bay championships, bold at Hastings, one of tjie club’s representatives, J. Miller, was placed in every event, as follows. 880 yds., and one mile, 1; 100yds., 220 yds., and 150yds. backstroke, 2- 50 yds. and 440yds. 3. D. W. McKeague was also placed in the 100yds. Miller’s successes won him the Cooper Cup, for most points in the championships. It is of interest to note that this is the second local swimmer to hold this cup since its inception in 1895, Mr iE. T. Chrisp having won it twice in succession in 1921 and .1922. Miller was successful in lower ing the Hawke’s Bay record in the mile race by Imin. 46 T-ssec, the record previously being held by C. Atkinson. The teams’ race for the Swain Memorial Cup saw this club’s team (the holders) defeated by a narrow margin for second place. ‘‘The facilities now available at tho Macrae Baths greatly simplify tho running of the carnivals and meet with the approval of officials, competitors and patrons. “It is witji the deepest regret we record the passing of Mr George Darloti, a vice-president of the club, and to bis relatives the club extends its deepest sympathy. The late Mr Darton did much to foster tho swimming sport in Poverty Bay, and it was duo largely to his - efforts that tho public of Gisborne secured the Macrae baths.

“The committee wishes to express its thanks to the Harbor Board ami Gisborne Rowing Club for the use of •sheds; the Borough Council, for the uumerous privileges granted in cou iicction with the Macrae Baths; tho press, for their reports of carnivals and river races; Messrs H. Seed and J>. Graham, the club’s Hawke’s Bay delegates; and all officials and those who^contribulcd in various ways towards (.lie success ol the year. “During the coming season the New Zealand championships will bo field in Napier and it is to be hoped the Hawke's Bay centre will see its way clear to allow Hie .Hawke’s Bay championships to this district. This club has always sent a strong team away to Hawke’s Bay at considerable expense for previous championships, and, should the centre grant the championships to Gisborne, we loci sure it will be looked forward t.o by all 'be local patrons of the sport.

STRONG FINANCES ■\\s disclosed in the Ijalouce sheet, the club' is still in a- strong financial position and. despite several large items on the expenditure side, has shown a small surplus on the season’s workings. Although gate takings. tho club’s main source of re venue, showed an increase of £22, bad weather spoiled two carnivals, which would otherwise have made a big difference 1 o our income. Last year it was decided to close the club’s bank account and open one with the Savings Bank. As compared with a debit last season for bank charges and cheque hooks of £1 -Is. this esason wo can report- a credit of 15s for interest. The new account is working quite satisfactorily, and the coming season should show a larger return of interest. On the. expenditure side prizes and trophies show an increase of £7. This is accounted for by the increase in prizes on account of large entries. The sum of £2O was required to cover tlie team’s expenses to tjie Hawke’s Bay championships, and in view of the honors gamed by the club ■we consider the expense justified. As previously mentioned, the club conducted a' carnival during the season for the benefit of the Returned Sold j ers > Association, tjie gross receipts boinf handed direct to the association An expense of approximately Co which was borne by the club, was incurred in this connection, but members will be pleased to hear that their efforts resulted m a local boy being sent to Flock House fpr training and, from reports, is doing well. “Tn conclusion, the outgoing committee thank members fo r their strong support during the season, and wishes ■ the incoming committee a successful term of office. We trust the coming season we will agam have the support of swimmers and the public.” ■
