N.Z. OHAAIPIONSHIPS

EXCELLENT PROGRESS ■<

AIISS AfACFARLANE BEATEN

KEEN AfATCHES TO-DAY

(Press Association! AUCKLAND, Jan. 27. The _ New Zealand lawn tennis championships were continued to-day in lino but windy weather. The attendance was again highly satisfactory.

Excellent progress was made in all sections, with the result that tomorrow's matches bring together, some of tho leading contenders for tho various titles. Particular interest attaches to the men’s singles matches in every instance and it is hard to say .who will be the four left in. The same remarks apply so far as the ladies’ singles are concerned,* and the games between Misses Nicholls and Martignn, also Airs. Dykes and Aliss Flail, in particular, should attract large galleries.

The big surprise of to-day’s play was the defeat, in straight sots, of Aliss Atariorio Macfarlane by Mrs. France. There were some very interesting contests in the second'round of the men’s singles, but all the leading players prevailed so there wore no surprises.

A. L. France had. a protracted duel, lor 2} hours with Court, the North Island champion, but there was not much variety in the play. Sturt made a good start against Aligns, leading .‘s—l and then 4—2 in the first set. Once lie had settled down, however, Angas had the Aucklander on the run by superior placements and court-craft. lie displayed a great variety of shots and sent back brilliant returns from many of Sturt’s hard drives

Wil son dropped the first set in his match against Robinson, failing to score a- single game. Thereafter, however, lie sighted the ball and, although Robinson stuck gamely to the Ja.sk, Wilson’s better all-round stroke production enabled him to iwin three sets in succession.

The Australian junior champion, Miss Hartigan, was fully extended to prevail over Airs. Melody in the second round of the ladies’ singles. Aliss Hartigan took the first sot to love and had a match point in the second set at 5—4. With characteristic tenacity, however. Airs. Alelody stuck to tiie. task and, staging a great recovery, she .won an advantage set. 'Mrs. Melody’s driving broke down in the third set, under the persistent pressure of her younger rival

Contrary to expectations. Airs, France was responsible for the elimination Miss Marjorie Alacfarlane. The Wellington player made no nice of the first set, in which Aliss Mncfarlano was most erratic with nearly all her shots. The second set was long-drawn-out, play taking place solely from the base line and it was only a Question of who committed most errors.

The seeded pairs all qualified in second round of the men’s doublesAlacphorson (Auckland)—Schadiek (Westport) and Robertson (Palmerston North) —Deaker (Dundedin) established a fresh record for court occupation during the tournament and one which will require a deal of beating. It took them 33 hours to decide four sets. As indicated by the score, it was a true marathon contest.

Mrs. Afoles.worth was the only Australian to drop out of the ladies’ doubles, she and her partner (Mrs. Thomson, of Wellington) being defeated by two other visitors, Alisses Lloyd and Hartigan. Fine, tennis was seen in the doubles match‘between Stedman—Yli-s J Imtigan and France—Airs. France. As the scores indicated, there was not a great deal in it, both sets running to advantage. Additional results were: ATEN’S SINGLES.
