BALANCED BUDGET PROBABLE In view of tlie figures disclosed in tho latest revenue returns, :> balanced Budget is rewarded as definitely in prospect. The returns furnish further evidence of the remarkable response made to the appeal tor the prompt payment of instalments of income tax due this month. During tho week ended on Saturday last income tax collected amounted to £l7000,000. an increase of £7,200,000 over the amount collected in (ho same week of last year. The total amount collected in tlie period from January ! to 23 was 666,900,000, compared with ■ £3-1,800,000 in the first 2-1 days of last year. The amount- collected as surtax during tho same week also shows an increase, over the corresponding period of last year. The total amount of surtax received'in the first 2.3 days of the quarter was Cl 8.750.000, being an increase of £8,500,000 over the total received in the first 2-1 clays of 1.931. The total deficit now stands at £131.000,000.
